Watson...is it one of the robots from Mystery Science Theater or the Smartest Golden Retriever ever?
Watson is Artificial Intelligence. A computer that thinks like you and me but light-years faster and doesn't have the brain-fog from last night's carb-loaded meal. To understand the basis of this, first, take how our search process has worked in the past. Previously, we could do a keyword search that would return a list of content listed in order of relevancy. Watson is different, it is based on Question-Answering technology. Instead of traditional search capabilities relying on computer-based "coding" language, Watson understands actual human languages. According to IBM, more than 100 different techniques are used to understand and analyze natural language, identify sources, find and generate hypotheses, find and score evidence and merge and track predictions. So instead of returning a list of content, it honestly answers your questions.
So, the question is, if I'm not planning on going on the hit game show, Jeopardy, why should Watson matter to me. True that Watson once competed on Jeopardy in 2011 but, after beating two former Jeopardy winners, IBM assigned Watson to a much bigger task. In 2013, IBM announced that Watson's first commercial application would be used in utilization management decisions in lung cancer treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering and WellPoint and more importantly, via IBM’s former business chief, 90% of the nurses are actually following the recommendations!
Massive corporations from GM to Under Armour to Imperial College are utilizing Watson now as well as other medical institutions. The way they are using it all depends on the current needs of the business and differs in so many ways but, a few examples are analyzing health and fitness insights, weather forecasting, predicting crime and adding Artificial Intelligence to cars to send personalized marketing within the confines of the automobile. These tools are legit, and it’s happening all around us. Now many may ask, how do we get a piece of this incredible intelligence without running a multi-billion-dollar organization and forking out millions for a Watson License? Well luckily, IBM has made it possible for organizations of all sizes!! Meet Watson Lite which allows the average-sized company to have access to this technology and analyze massive amounts of data with a cost-effective subscription instead of the entire license. This can mean retrieving and applying data that most of us could only dream of identifying and tracking. We at Pendello Solutions have fully jumped on board with this version of Watson and are fully applying it to better support our customer base. With the use of Watson Lite, we are becoming more proactive at identifying issues and potential problems before it impacts our users. (We are stopping the bad before the bad even happens…very similar to ESP but not that creepy.) Watson indeed is a game changer, and we are thrilled to be a part of it!
If you have any questions about this mind-blowing new technology or are interested in what type of data we are finding and how the utilization of Watson is being used at Pendello, contact us now! We at Pendello love our data and would like to share our love of it with you!
